WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICES IMPROVES AS CITY OF ANDRALANITRA BUILDS NEW LANDFILL IN MADAGASCAR

Improving waste management in Antananarivo helped reduce the pollution caused by the Andralanitra landfill, improve the living conditions of some 800 neighbouring families, improve access to drinking water for nearby villages and contribute to sustainable waste management in Antananarivo. The general objectives of the project were to improve collection and exploitation of the landfill by neighbouring communities, combat the pollution caused by the landfill, improve drinking water network for the surrounding areas and prepare the closing down of the landfill in compliance to regulating scavengers and implanting a reconversion plan for the affected communities.

The Project launched in 2010 with AFD financing the project through a EUR 2million grant to the Government of Madagascar then reallocated to Community of Antananarivo to improve the informal activities occurring at the landfill.
